Welcome to Introduction to Theatre!

“The arrival of the Queen of the Night” in The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Stage set by Karl Friedrich Schinkel for an 1815 production.

Your primary learning goal will be to work toward an understanding of theatre from the point of view of theatre practitioners and theatre scholars. As theater practitioners, you will take on different theatrical roles as theater critics, playwrights, directors, performers, dramaturges, or designers, harnessing your own creative imagination in order to present a final creative project at the end of semester. As theatre scholars, you will write performance reviews and complete two written exams which give you an opportunity to think critically about the material covered over the course of the semester. At the end of the semester, you will be able to

  1. Identify and apply the fundamental concepts of theatre related to acting, audience response, dramatic literature, spatial arrangements, directing, design, and production
  2. Analyze and evaluate written scripts and live performances
  3. Design and produce a creative theatre project.
  4. Express views and analysis of plays, productions, and theatrical traditions through writing and speaking.
